Lake Como

Please note that Milan is approximately 50 miles from Lake Como. With normal traffic, it can take about 2 hours to drive and 1 hour by rail. I recommend that you contact the hotel where you’re staying and inquire if they provide a shuttle service or pick up from the airport.

 

I have included some options below on how to get to Lake Como from the airport.

Rail

From Malpensa to Milano Centrale Railway Station, please go to Malpensa Terminal 1 to take the train to Milano Centrale Railway Station. This trip will take you about 45-55 minutes and please check the schedule here.

 

From Linate to Milano Centrale Railway Station, you can head to the Air Bus Centrale Railway Station to catch the shuttle. This trip will take you about 20-30 minutes, and please check the schedule here.

 

You can take the train from Milano Centrale Railway Station to Varenna-Esino.

 

Please visit this site to buy train tickets in advance:

  • Type in "Milan Malpensa" to "Varenna-Esino" and your date of arrival.
  • A one way ticket covers the express train from the airport to Milano-Centrale with a transfer at Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino. We recommend that you purchase a round-trip ticket online as there is no ticket kiosk at Varenna-Esino.

Arriving in Milan & catching the train to Milano-Centrale Railway Station

  • At Malpensa, please go to Malpensa Terminal 1 and look out for signs pointing you to the express train. At Linate, please head to the Air Bus Centrale Railway Station.
  • Express train and shuttle rides from Malpensa and Linate to Milano Centrale is 35 -45 minutes, and 20-30 minutes, respectively.
  • Tickets are available for purchase at the airport to Milano Centrale for €12 from Malpensa and €5 from Linate per person/one way.

 

Catching the train to Varenna-Esino via Tirano or Sondrio

  • The final destination for the train to Varenna will be either Tirano or Sondrio.  Locate the train and track number on the "Big Board." You will be looking for the train heading towards Tirano or Sondrio.  If you are confused, please ask a ticket counter representative and please do not talk to suspicious people.
  • The train ride is about one hour and the Varenna-Esino stop is a few minutes after the "Lecco" stop.
  • The trains run every hour until 6:20 pm.
  • Some trains have interactive maps to show you where you are. As a tip, do not fall asleep on the train and grab an espresso before the ride!

 

Arriving in Varenna

  • Please have your luggage ready to depart the train before the train stops as the train does not remain idle for very long.
  • Follow the signs to the ferry port, to the center of town, to your lodging, or catch a taxi at the station. I would also recommend contacting the taxi services listed below to schedule a pick-up time as taxi’s may not be readily available at the port.
